CHILDHOOD & EARLY LIFE
CHILDHOOD & EARLY LIFE

Cornell Iral Haynes, Jr., better known by his professional name Nelly, was born on November 2, 1974, in Austin, Texas, to Cornell Haynes Sr. and Rhonda Mack, where his father served in the armed forces.

After his parents got divorced when he was seven, he lived with his mother in St. Louis and later relocated to University City, Missouri during his teenage years.

His interests growing up ran from baseball to rap, and he formed his first musical group, St. Lunatics, with some high school friends. St. Lunatics found some local success in 1996 with the self-produced single "Gimme What You Got," but success didn't stick, and St. Lunatics decided that Nelly would be better off as a solo act who could bring attention to the whole group. It wasn't long before the theory was proved correct, as Nelly was signed by Universal to a solo contract. What follows is history...

RELATIONSHIPS

He has been in an on and off relationship with R&B singer, Ashanti during almost 10 years

Since 2014, Shantel Jackson and Nelly have been in a long-term relationship

CHILDHOOD & EARLY LIFE
TATTOOS

Nelly has at least 6 tattoos, each with a special meaning or memory.

The "Lunatic" tattoo on Nelly's abdomen is in reference to his rap group The St. Lunatics, which formed in 1995.

Nelly explained the tattoo on his right arm: "I've got the name 'Moses' on my inner right arm. I can relate to this story, as far as leading people out. "That's how my boys (the St. Lunatics) and I felt about the St. Louis music scene. We felt like we were leading some of the top musical talent out of there, on to broader horizons."

There are five playing cards that spell out his name "Nelly" along with flames and a dice on his right shoulder.

Nelly has a bloody heart inked on his chest.

There is a tribal design tattooed on his left arm & neck.

FASHION STLYE

This Grammy Award winning American rapper began the trend of wearing sweatshirts and sports jersey’s backwards and also the trend of wearing Band-Aids on the face.

At first, Nelly wore the Band-Aid to cover up a basketball injury. But according to Entertainment Weekly, after that scar healed, Nelly kept wearing it in honor of ex St. Lunatic Lavell Webb (a.k.a. City Spud), who collaborated with Nelly on his hit song 'Ride Wit Me'. Nelly says that Webb, who is serving a 10-year sentence for robbery, is innocent. 'I know when he sees me on TV and sees me wearing this Band-Aid, he knows I'm wearing it for him,' said Nelly. That sounds loony even for a St. Lunatic.
